2024 PETER SCOTT AWARD

Niall McNulty

Niall McNulty is the tenth recipient of the Peter Scott Award for Outstanding Contribution to Charity for his long-standing work in Cumbrian communities.

Niall started working at Carlisle People First in 1999 where his role supported adults labelled as having a learning disability to run their own rights based self advocacy organisation. In the 25 years since then, he has worked across Cumbria creating, managing and delivering projects that enable others to recognise and address power imbalances in their lives. His career has been guided by values of justice, equity and fostering true belonging.

Until recently, Niall served as Chair of Trustees at Anti Racist Cumbria, a charity helping people and organisations move from ‘not racist’ to ‘anti-racist’ in order to create spaces where all people are empowered.

The award comes with a grant of £2,500, which Niall has chosen to give to Anti Racist Cumbria to put towards a course for mixed heritage ARC volunteers called “So Now I’m Mixed ‘Race’?”

In Niall’s words:

“I’m very surprised to have been chosen but am absolutely delighted. So much excellent community work happens around Cumbria and I’d like to thank Anti Racist Cumbria for being able to give me an opportunity to do something that I’m incredibly passionate about which is challenging social injustice and racism."
